India's PM-elect Narendra Modi is due to meet the president to formally claim his right to form the government after his BJP won a landslide victory in the general election.

The BJP's 282 MPs elected Mr Modi as the leader of the parliamentary party at a meeting on Tuesday.

Mr Modi has been holding a series of meetings to finalise his cabinet.

The BJP won a landslide majority in parliament and will be able to govern without coalition partners.

The date for Mr Modi's swearing in as the prime minister has still not been announced, although reports say that it could happen at the weekend.

On Tuesday, the BJP's newly-elected MPs met in the parliament house to elect Mr Modi as their leader.

His name was proposed by senior BJP leader LK Advani and seconded by several senior leaders, including Murli Manohar Joshi, Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley.

In a few hours, Mr Modi and other senior party leaders are expected to meet President Pranab Mukherjee.

Later in the day, he is expected to return to Gujarat for a public meeting in Ahmedabad city.

The Congress party finished with just 44 of the 543 seats and under 20% of the vote in what was its worst ever performance.
